The French Academy awarded the Grand Francophone Award 2020 to the Lebanese writer Alexandre Najjar.
This prize is ‘intended to crown the work of a French-speaking natural person who, in his country or internationally, has made an eminent contribution to the maintenance and illustration of the French language’.
Contacted by the Cultural Agenda, Alexandre Najjar said: “I am very happy to receive this award which crowns 35 years of work. It undoubtedly rewards the writer, but also the French-speaking lawyer and the activist of the French-speaking world who is for us a necessary openness and a source of cultural enrichment. In these dark times that we are going through, it is a sign that it is culture, and not missiles, that puts Lebanon on the world map. We have excellent artists in all fields and many young talents, that It is thanks to them that our country will continue to shine! “
