Lebanon ranks first in Arab world in Sports Merit Ranking for 2024
A small economy, big results: Lebanon outperforms regional peers in a global sports index.

15th Worldwide, First in the Arab World

Lebanon ranked 15th globally and first among Arab countries in the 2024 Sports Merit Ranking, an index that compares sports achievements to economic capacity. The ranking, part of the yearly WRCES report, covers 206 countries and more than 100 sports under the Olympic movement.

Overperforming Despite Crisis

The report notes that Lebanon’s progress comes despite severe economic challenges and the repercussions of recent conflict. Athletes and federations have continued to deliver results in basketball, football, tennis, combat sports, and more, often supported by private sponsors and volunteers rather than stable public funding.

Proof of Potential

Being recognised as the top Arab country in the Sports Merit Ranking confirms that Lebanese sport is punching above its weight. It raises an important question: what more could be achieved with consistent institutional support and investment in facilities and youth development?
