Health Minister launches new agreement with WB to increase intensive care beds in government hospitals

Caretaker Minister of Public Health, Dr. Hamad Hassan, on Thursday launched a new phase of the plan agreement between the World Bank and the Ministry of Public Health to equip government hospitals with extra intensive care beds.

The plan includes 117 intensive care beds for Coronavirus patients, provided that 22 intensive care beds will be ready within ten days, and 95 intensive care beds will be ready within a maximum of three weeks. This will bring the total number of intensive care beds for Coronavirus patients in government hospitals to 379.

The Minister of Public Health thanked the World Bank for its cooperation with the Ministry and its facilitation of procedures.

“This only reflects the World Bank’s confidence in the role and performance of the Ministry of Public Health and its ability to provide this additional increase in the numbers of intensive care beds,” Minister Hassan said.

“This refutes what is being said by some media outlets, which have been doubting the transparency of the MoH in handling the World Bank loan or other grants. All donors insist on transparency, which is always confirmed by auditing companies,” maintained Hassan.

He also explained that the WB loan was being used to raise readiness in all hospitals whilst maintaining fair distribution to ensure readiness in all of the Lebanese regions alike.
