AUB’s Rania Jaber recipient of an international award for graduate medical education

The American University of Beirut (AUB)’s Rania Jaber has been awarded the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education International (ACGME-I) 2021 award for staff.

Offered by the ACGME Board of Directors, the award is one of three that honor individuals who have been instrumental in pursuing and implementing a transition in their respective institutions to ACGME-I accreditation.  It honors a staff person who has demonstrated extraordinary service to the educational process, to ACGME residents, and to meeting ACGME International (ACGME-I) requirements.

With a goal to improve healthcare by assessing and advancing the quality of resident physicians’ education through accreditation, ACGME-I presented its awards at the 2021 Annual Educational Conference held virtually across the globe February 24-26, 2021 for over 5,000 participants from the graduate medical education community.

Rania Jaber is a graduate medical education manager at AUB. She was presented with the staff award in recognition of her skills, expertise, leadership, and communication skills. A graduate of AUB, with a bachelor’s in economics and a master’s in public health with a concentration in health management and policy, Jaber joined AUB staff in 2005, when she was first selected to be the internal medicine residency coordinator. Over the years, she became an expert in actualizing ACGME and ACGME-I requirements, training residency program directors and administrators at AUBMC on the required skills, attitudes, documentation, and strict implementation of the required standards.

“[Ms. Jaber’s] intelligence, hard work, and gentle demeanor was vital in convincing faculty members and administrators to advocate for implementing ACGME requirements, even before ACGME International accreditation was available,” ACGME-I stated in its announcement of the award. “Following the American University of Beirut Medical Center’s efforts to apply for institutional accreditation, it was clear Ms. Jaber should lead the administrative team to achieve that goal.”

She became known for her professionalism and friendly demeanor, no matter the workload, as she organized workshops, conferences, taught sessions, and managed numerous site visits by ACGME reviewers over the years.

“In addition to her personal skill and expertise in accreditation, Rania leads a dedicated group of administrators, all of whom have adopted her unique and extremely effective communication skills and her serious and meticulous attention to every detail of the process,” wrote Associate Dean for Medical Education Kamal Badr in his announcement of the news to AUB and AUBMC faculty and staff. “I am sure you all join me in thanking Rania for her dedication and for raising the banners of AUB and Lebanon this week across the world of GME!”

Nominations received by ACGME-I attested to Jaber’s key role in the adoption, implementation, and maintenance follow-up of ACGME-I standards in residency training at AUB, guiding the residency programs and AUB to achieve ACGME-I accreditation. She was commended for her commitment to the preparation and training of all GME coordinators of AUB, and for her passion and determination despite several obstacles that the program had faced. —AUB News and Media Relations
