Araji: Lebanon currently enjoys 40% herd immunity against Covid-19

Parliamentary Health Committee Head, MP Assem Araji, on Thursday told “The Voice of All Lebanon” radio station that Lebanon currently enjoyed 40% herd immunity against the Coronavirus as a result of recorded infections, in addition to the number of vaccinated individuals to date.

“Accelerating the pace of vaccination within the next two months may raise the level of immunity to 60%, which is expected to reach 80% percent by the end of the year if things go as expected,” Araji explained.

He pointed out that according to international studies, the anticipated duration of the gained immunity should last for approximately three to six months.

However, he regretted that the number of registrants on COVAX platform was still low, fearing that this might reflect negatively on the country’s herd’s immunity.

As for the scientific committee’s decision to administer the AstraZeneca vaccine for groups under fifty years of age, Araji pointed out that “the scientific committee, after a series of meetings, has decided to administer this vaccine to age groups over thirty years old due to the fact that statistics have shown that the rate of blood clots resulting from the AstraZeneca vaccine was a rare two per million.”
