Mikati Hosts Al Riyadi and Hekmeh Basketball Champions at Grand Serail

Lebanon’s basketball rivalry moved from the court to the heart of government as Prime Minister Najib Mikati welcomed champions Al Riyadi and Hekmeh for a rare joint celebration.

Basketball Takes Center Stage in Beirut

In a symbolic scene at the Grand Serail, Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati received a joint delegation from Lebanese champions Al Riyadi and arch-rivals Hekmeh, in the presence of Youth and Sports Minister George Kallas and Hekmeh’s honorary president MP Jihad Pakradouni. Club presidents Mazen Tabbara (Al Riyadi) and Ragheb Haddad (Hekmeh) attended alongside players and board members, turning the historic seat of government into a celebration of the country’s leading sport.

“We Are Proud of You All”

Mikati underlined how basketball has become a national reference point, noting that Al Riyadi and Hekmeh are “indistinguishable” in their ability to represent Lebanon with honour. He praised the intensity of their recent derby and emphasised that what matters most is finishing games in a spirit of sportsmanship, whatever the result. For a country facing deep political and economic challenges, he said, the teams’ success offers a reminder that Lebanon can still show its “best and finest” face to the world.

Clubs Speak of Responsibility and Hope

Minister Kallas highlighted that “sports keep Lebanon smiling”, while Hekmeh and Al Riyadi officials spoke about the responsibility of carrying the game’s heritage and inspiring youth. They stressed that, behind the rivalry, players often share locker rooms in national teams and friendship off the court, proving that competition and coexistence can go hand in hand.

The meeting closed with a shared message: Lebanon’s basketball success is not just about trophies but about offering the younger generation an alternative path built on discipline, teamwork, and unity.
